Kathy Altman

While highly trained in many forms of dance, it wasn't until Kathy's catalytic meeting with Gabrielle 30 years ago that her true calling found her. As Co-Director of The Moving Center School, Kathy was the first person asked to help Gabrielle bring her work out into the world. Over the past 20 years Kathy's teaching has brought thousands of people back to the joy of their own, original movement. Using dance as the medium, Kathy illuminates for her students "as on the dance floor, so in life." She is devoted to inspiring people to live the teachings of presence, patience and practice long after the music ends. As a visual artist, Kathy seamlessly coaches people (artists and "art-phobes" alike) to express themselves right from the movement of the dance into the creation of astonishing living art forms, such as altars, prayer vessels, personal tankas and body castings.

Kathy's teaching experience also includes 15 years as Director of Education and Training for Planned Parenthood, where she developed programs for physicians, nurses, counselors, teachers and clergy. She wrote state-wide curriculum on family health and sexuality that was implemented into the California school system, and was a consultant to the California State Department of Health for over a decade.

Long-term students and teachers of Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms moving meditation practice, Kathy Altman and her partner Lori Saltzman co-founded The Moving Center School in 1987 with a boombox, six students, and boundless passion for making this work available around the globe. Today, the Mill Valley, California school offers classes, workshops, intensives, private movement sessions and Sweat Your Prayers™ to approximately 400-600 students a week (and growing!). As one of the largest local 5Rhythms communities in the world, our school has become an international destination for students wanting to immerse themselves in this practice, train as teachers of the work, or simply savor the healing power of mindful movement in community with others.
